FAQs

I haven’t attended a Creative Writing Retreat, nor written anything before. Is that okay?

Absolutely! At our creative writing retreat, we’ll inspire you to begin a writing project, and give you the time and confidence to build your skills as a writer. You won’t have to share anything you write unless you choose to, but if you do, you can be certain of an enthusiastic response. Never having attended a creative writing retreat before isn’t a problem, either. And if you don’t usually travel – don’t worry. I’m happy to advise you on travel arrangements, and to answer any questions you may have. When you reach the international airport in Merida, all you need to do is show the address of our hotel to a cab driver. We’re a short drive from the airport. However, if this feels daunting in a new country, let me know, and I’m happy to meet your flight when it lands.

I am an experienced writer with a near-complete novel. Will I benefit from this retreat?

Absolutely! Our boutique hotel is the perfect environment to hunker down and complete a project. If you run into challenges, there are plenty of creative minds to help get you unstuck, and if you need additional support, I’m always happy to make time to chat. Our workshops will prove invaluable, whether you are looking for editing strategies or beginning to think about agents and publishers.

My husband/friend wants to attend, but doesn’t want to write. Is that okay?

There’s plenty for accompanying friends and family to do within a short walk of our hotel, and further afield. There’s even a small pool at Luz, perfect for relaxing and whiling away the hours. Occasionally, participants have attended our retreats with older children, and workshops in creative writing can sometimes be arranged separately for writers ages 10-17. To be fair to our adult writers, you must be aged 18 or over to take our scheduled writing classes.

I have special needs – mobility, diet etc. Can you accommodate?

Dietary restrictions are unlikely to be an issue with the wide choice of foods available in Merida. If you have mobility or other health challenges, call us so we can discuss your specific needs.

I have rarely travelled outside North America. I’m worried about safety, currency, the language – how will I know what to do?

Merida is a safe city, and the chosen retirement destination for many Canadians and Americans in search of warmth. English is spoken widely, and most restaurants offer menus in both languages. A few weeks before our retreat, I will send out a ‘manual’ which should answer most of the questions you may have regarding currency, electrical appliances, weather and more.

Can I use my laptop to write? Is there wi fi?

Yes, and yes!

Can I speak with someone before I book?

Of course! Our office number is +1 416 766 7124. We’re happy to take as long as you like to answer all your questions. We welcome just 8-12 people on each trip, which means we can offer a very personal approach. We’re here to help.
