Costa Rica Writing Workshops
Our Writing Workshops
Throughout our week-long retreat, we gather each morning for writing workshops which are tailor-made to the needs of participants, but usually include writing prompts, discussions on writing technique and a chance for writers to share their work with the group, if they wish. We’ll often hold sessions on sources of inspiration for writers, ways to develop rounded characters, how to write dialogue, story structure, beginnings and endings, writing memoir, and the process of editing your own fiction. Workshop content can easily be adjusted to meet the needs of playwrights, fiction writers, memoir writers, poets and others. Prompts are chosen carefully to offer growth opportunities for writers at all stages, from beginner to very experienced. All sessions are lively and informal, with a balance between intense writing, and friendly discussion.
In addition to the workshops, the writing portion of our week includes two readings. The first reading is offered by Julie Hartley, the course facilitator, at the beginning of the week. The second reading is run by the participants themselves, and is a chance for you to celebrate your achievements by sharing excerpts of your work with the group on the last evening of the trip, should you wish to do so.
Julie Hartley has more than 20 years’ experience as a writer and writing instructor, and has run 20 previous overseas tours. She is the author of The Finding Place, which was published in Canada and USA by Red Deer Press. Hartley is an accomplished novelist, poet, short story writer and playwright. Her plays have toured England, Ireland, Scotland and Canada, and she has taught creative writing for adults and teens at conferences and writing centres all over the world. Julie Hartley has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. You can read more about her at www.juliehartley.ca
