Welcome to La Fortuna, Costa Rica!
Our creative writing retreat centre is Finca Luna Nueva, a beautiful lodge in the heart of rain forest just 2 hours from San Jose and 15 minutes from the tourist town of La Fortuna. Accommodation is in pleasant single and double rooms, most with patios and rain forest views. Small cottages are available for writers attending with family or friends. The lodge has a lovely pool surrounded in tropical flowers, a hot tub, spa services, several hiking trails, a lookout tower and a poolside restaurant where writing workshops often take place. Vegetarian and gluten free diets can be catered to, and the emphasis is on a wide range of healthy meals with local ingredients, where possible.
Our creative writing retreat at Finca Luna Nueva offers writers the spectacular surroundings that lead to inspiration, and the serenity we need to get words down on paper. Morning writing workshops take place in a circle of comfortable chairs overlooking the gardens and pool. If you choose to write in the afternoons, you can do so at your desk, in reclining poolside chairs, in one of the many patios seating areas, at the yoga pavilion, or even at the top of the lookout tower, gazing down on the rain forest. Choose complete privacy, or the companionship of other writers. Finca Luna Nueva is a haven from the bustle of the modern world, yet our creative writing retreat is located only minutes from the tourist town of La Fortuna, which offers a range of sightseeing opportunities, whenever you need them.
More than a Writing Retreat…
Some of our participants choose to focus exclusively on their writing while they are with us, taking our workshops in the mornings, and working on personal projects in the afternoons. However, if you’re attending with family and friends, or you’d like greater variety, there’s a wealth of things to do. Finca Luna Nueva offers enrichment opportunities such as a chocolate making workshop, a night hike, and walks through the rainforest with a knowledgeable guide. All participants receive a fascinating tour of the lodge’s bio dynamic farm free of charge, and our package includes a group visit to the nearby hot springs at the mid point of our week.
Within a short cab ride of Finca Luna Nueva, you’ll find zip lining, caving, horseback riding, an animal sanctuary, a hike to the base of a volcano, bird watching trips, boat tours, tourist shops, great restaurants and more. All trips and taxis can be booked directly at reception, when you arrive.
Our participants come from all over the world, most arriving by air at San Jose’s international airport in the afternoon of the first day. Our group gathers in the airport restaurant, and we travel together by air conditioned mini bus to our lodge. The journey takes two hours, through lovely scenery, and we make a stop halfway for refreshments, and to enjoy the views. We arrive at Finca Luna Nueva in time to for our first dinner together.
Julie Hartley is the tour guide and writing facilitator for all our trips, and she is on hand to help with anything you need throughout your stay. In addition, the reception staff at Finca Luna Nueva are extremely helpful and speak excellent English. At the end of tour, we all return together to San Jose airport, though it is also possible to extend your stay in Costa Rica, either at our lodge, or at a hotel in the capital city.
