1. Our English program is unique. All four of our instructors are published authors with MFAs in Creative Writing and years of teaching experience. We use our love of words and literature to inspire our students to reach new heights.
  2. We focus exclusively on Reading and Writing skills – spending extensive time on both. Language Arts and English curricula include not only Writing and Reading, but also Oral Communication and Media Studies. This means that in some schools, only half the assigned English time is spent on Reading and Writing – and even this portion of the course may explore everything from websites and graphic novels to advertising campaigns. While these are all important, their inclusion has diluted the time some students spend on extended writing pieces and on reading literature  – weakening the skills that are essential to do well in further education. Any university lecturer will tell you that their first year students lack the writing and reading skills they had a decade ago – and the pandemic has only made this worse.
  3. We use creative writing to teach grammar and language conventions in a way that is imaginative… and fun. You’ll find no worksheets in our classes. Where possible, grammar, language conventions, structure and editing are taught through creative writing, and writing projects geared to the interests of students.
  4. We foster a love of reading in all our classes, and build the skills you need to read deeply, and well. Together we read everything from Shakespeare to excerpts from contemporary memoirs, and from film reviews to newspaper articles. Students learn to determine authorial intent and subtextual meaning, sharing their discoveries in discussion, and in writing.
  5. Our unique focus makes our English Tutoring Program attractive not only to students struggling to achieve the grades they want, but also to keen writers and readers whose needs are not being met in school.
  6. We offer in-person English Tutoring in Toronto, as well as an @home program, available virtually to students all over North America.
  7. Our small class sizes! We accept no more than 6 students in a group, with the average class size being 3 students. This ensures that material can be geared specifically to a student’s needs and interests.
  8. Our instructors offer one on one support! Teachers are present on a Google Doc as the student works, in a way they never can be in a large class. Instructors annotate work as the students create, and edit alongside each student. This ensures that students learn as much as possible from each assignment.
  9. Students are grouped according to needs and interests, as well as age and grade.
  10. The reviews speak for themselves! Check us out on Google and Facebook to see what parents have to say about our English Tutoring program.

I highly recommend Centauri writing program. My daughter looks forward to going and really enjoys her time there. She has better writing skills, more confidence in writing and a newfound interest in reading and discussion. Words are not enough to express my gratitude. Thank you to Julie and her team for all your positive encouragement and support.” G.A., Parent, from a review on Google.
